Language

Brita was answering questions from one of the Brain Quest games, and the question came up, "Fix this sentence: 'We saw two mouses running through the field.'" Her response was, "We need to put them back in the mouse trap!"

When Benton was sick with a fever, he asked us several times to take his "time" or his "picture" (instead of temperature).

While driving to the store, Brita asked if the car went by itself. I gave her a long convoluted answer involving engines, wheels, gas and stuff. When I got to the end she said, "What did you say?" So I repeated my self and again, when I got to the end she said, "What did you say?" So I got frustrated about not explaining it clearly for her and said, "Ask Dad." So she said, "Dad, what did Mom say?"

Benton woke up in the middle of the night and was mumbling something that we couldn't make out. We kept trying to figure it out. He finally started answering yes/no questions. "Do you want to get up?" "No." "Do you want some water?" "No." And finally, minutes later.... "Do you want to lay down and go back to sleep?" "Yes." So he lied down and went back to sleep.

Dinner

Today I spent a good portion of my time doing Khan Academy. I made it quite a ways in the math section. Further after I started using paper instead of trying to do it all in my head. Brita was helping me. She told me she could only do math when Dad helped her and she could only read when Mom helped her.

When Peter came home we had dinner and during it he started asking the kids all sorts of questions, like what does it mean to eat (Brita's answer: you get energy) or what do you see at a grocery store (Benton's answer: you buy groceries). Brita then told him that she wanted to do more math, so he started giving her word problems. She's pretty good. She did three times four and five plus five and six divided by three and all sorts of things. At one point he asked how many wheels a car would have if it lost one wheel. She said three and then she said that it wouldn't be able to drive. That was apparently the most hilarious thing ever said because she busted up. And then Benton did. And then Peter and I did. And the kids were covering their mouths with their hands and laughing and laughing. And Benton would say, "Oh my gosh" (he's not supposed to say that, so it makes it that much funnier, I suppose) and start laughing again.

It was a wonderful night. And the food was good even if I'm the only one who liked it.

Tales of the sicknesses

The kids have been sick for the last week. Benton and I started throwing up at the stake rearranging meeting and continued all that night. Peter started throwing up the next day. Brita and Mima never threw up. Brita and Benton had fevers. Thursday the kids were in bed by five o'clock. Benton threw up in the fifteen minutes that Peter was home before he had to be a bishopric meetings. After I got them back to sleep they took turns waking up all night. Brita ended up sleeping in the computer room with Peter. They would wake up yelling because they hurt so much. Mima was awake and wanting to play until about 11 that night. She's finally sick now. We all have coughs. Although they aren't bad during the day. Brita was up for hours last night coughing. Poor kid. They seem better now. They're happier than they have been in a long time. Hopefully the sickness leaves us alone for a while.

Memories

Did I ever tell you about the time Benton dropped a miniature penguin bowling ball into the trumpet and Peter had to super glue a rope to it to get it out? Good times.

Happy Easter

The kids whenever they wear a hat, and sometimes when they don't they'll go up to someone and say "Happy Easter." The correct response is, "Happy Easter."

You know, from Easter Parade.

Lately Brita's gotten tired of that so she added "banana" to the mix. You know, "Happy banana Easter to you."

It drives Benton nuts. He gets so mad about it. It's really funny.

And as a side note, I can't blog about Brita or Benton any more without them knowing because Brita sits by me and says, "Why are you talking about me? That says Brita, doesn't it? And that says Benton. What are you saying about us?" I like my kids.

Change

Our ward boundaries changed this last Sunday night. And Peter got called to be executive secretary. We lost two big chunks of our ward and got about 65 new households. I've been trying to update my maps because I like to do futile things like that. I don't have house numbers for the new part of our ward, so it's tricky.

I'm pretty sad about losing some of the people I really wanted to be friends with. I tend to think of people as potential friends and near friends because I don't really consider myself to have real friends here. I'm pretty close on a couple people. That's saying more about me than about them. They're awesome. I'm weird. That was a tangent

I have no idea how many kids we're getting. There are two families with five kids each in them, but I don't know their ages. There are more families with kids, but those are the biggest ones. As far as I know. It's kind of annoying to just know data about people and not anything about the people themselves. I'm really bad at getting to know people.

And now the whiny boy next to me is winning, so we're off to watch a movie.

Blessed February

So it's February today. That means Fluorescent Yellow Food Day is this month. And Peter's birthday. And we get to go shopping.

Around the third of last month I got annoyed with how many transactions were on our credit and debit cards so I decided that we needed to stop shopping for a while. So I asked Peter if we could not spend money in January. He agreed..because he pretty much agrees to anything I ask him. I did say we could buy milk though. That day he called me from work to see if he could go out to lunch with some of his co-workers. I said yes. We were pretty liberal about what we did spend money on. We bought cough drops. And gas. And went out to dinner with Peter's co-workers (we had to meet the new girlfriend) and paid the babysitter. I should have bought some things so I could have taken a salad to a funeral, but I asked if I could take rolls instead. I really hope they had enough of the things they asked me to sign up for. I still kind of feel bad about that. The rolls were good, though.

I ended up bartering a little bit toward the end. I think the most valuable lesson I learned from all this is that you should always have extra toilet paper to barter with. I traded some white sauce and peas for some potatoes. I learned that white sauce isn't half bad with whole wheat flour. Maybe I just had low expectations, though. I also learned that I can't cook for one person to save my life. I traded toilet paper for hamburger and parsley.

About half way through the month I mentioned that we weren't buying groceries and the bishop's wife talked to me to make sure we were okay. It was a little bit funny. No, no, we're just doing it because I'm stupid. We're fine. It's pretty cool that we have such an on-top-of-it ward, though.

We got the stomach flu a couple days ago and I wanted pudding, but Peter said we couldn't get anything until today. Oh--I made a rule that my Jamba Juice gift card didn't count as spending money either, so we went to Jamba Juice twice. I love Jamba Juice.

We pretty much didn't make a dent in the amount of food we have and I even saved the kids a box of mac and cheese to have the last night, which was handy because I really didn't want to come up with something else to eat.

And that was pretty much our January. In rambling form.

Royalty

Today the kids made crowns at the library story time. On the way home Brita was saying that she was a queen and when she got home she would put on a dress up dress and wear her crown and be a queen some more, but just for pretend. She said, "I'm pretending to be a queen and Benton's pretending to be a king and Mima's pretending to be Moses. Or Rapunzel, you know, when Rapunzel was a baby."
